How to Test a Pickleball Paddle Before Buying (The 6-Shot Demo)

The worst time to discover a paddle isn't right for you is at hour 31 — one hour past the demo window. This is the 6-shot test we run on every new Quick Shot prototype and every competitor paddle we evaluate. If a paddle passes all six, keep it. If it fails two, return it. Full buyer framework is in the best pickleball paddle 2026 guide.

Shot 1: The flat dink

Stand at the kitchen line and trade 30 flat dinks. Are you pushing them? Popping them up? A good control paddle sits the ball down every time. A bad one tells you in the first 10 reps.

Shot 2: The topspin roll

Brush up on the ball from the kitchen line. The ball should dip fast and land inside the opposing kitchen. If you can't generate dip, the face is too smooth — see our best paddles for spin for better options.

Shot 3: The third-shot drop

From the baseline, aim for the opposing kitchen. Ten in a row. A good paddle gives you controlled arc. A boardy paddle will spit balls out long.

Shot 4: The third-shot drive

Same position, but drive hard. The question is: did the ball clear the net at the speed you wanted without sailing long?

Shot 5: The hands battle

Trade quick volleys at the kitchen with a partner. Pay attention to swing weight and maneuverability. Our swing weight explainer covers why this matters.

Shot 6: The off-center mishit

Intentionally mishit off the top and side of the paddle. A big sweet spot is forgiving. A small one twists the paddle out of your hand.

What to do with your scores

Score each shot 1–5. Total above 24 = keeper. Total 18–23 = workable, consider adding weight per our lead tape guide. Below 18 = return it.

?Frequently Asked Questions

Do paddle companies really let you return a used paddle?

Many do, but the policy varies. Most premium brands have a 30-day 'play-test' return window — you can return even if it's been used — as long as it's not damaged. Always confirm before you buy.

How many hours does it take to know if a paddle is right for you?

The 6-shot test here takes about 20 minutes and gets you 80% of the way. The last 20% comes in match play — plan on 3–5 sessions before you're sure.
